“In the future everyone will be world famous for 15 mins”
I am not sure if Andy Warhol had a time machine but he sure was a visionary; he didn’t predict the social storm of fame but he envisioned everyone being famous or wanting to be.
So, what does Andy Warhol have to do with being a celeb designer? What is a celeb designer?
Everything is now media based, designers have become and should become more media conscious when designing, promoting and creating content. There are a lot of designers who are taking advantage of media outlets such as: Youtube, Medium, Instagram, Snapchat, to name a few who have a large following. They have taken their hustle to another level, a portfolio website simply isn’t enough. We are in a media centric age where even Greg who sells custom mugs down the road, is a celeb in his own right because of the following he has garnered. The famous designers that we grew up learning about are no longer the heroes of design even though they were famous for being great at design.
The world is now interested in everything else that you do, the life of a designer, what they do when they wake up, what tools they use etc.
Utilise as many media outlets that are conducive to you and your vision for your personal brand; don’t create youtube content if you don’t like to talk. Designers now have the opportunity to become celebs in their own right. In the words of Gary Vaynerchuk “be a media company first, produce content” .
